Abstract
The economic and social expansion of seamerchants in Havre during the 18th century seemed quite unique when compared to those in other major French commercial ports. Several reasons can be given to explain this difference. First, such a success relied upon their insertion within the Atlantic system and the constant trading relations that were maintained with the successive centres of World Economy. Human qualities were also crucial to guarantee prosperity. Yet, if a seamerchant wanted to establish himself in the long term inside the Atlantic system, he could not ignore important factors of choices, such as an appropriate legal structure, a high standard bank credit, the knowledge of trade strategies and goals to reach and the efficiency of international information and business correspondence networks. Furthermore, his social rise depended on his own cultural enlightening, on the strenght of his friendship and on the influence of his trade circle. Thus, seamerchants from Havre would keep their eyes on the local workforce and design subtle plans towards the authorities so as to defend their group interests at the same time. When they felt social supremacy was bound to disappear because on industrialization, they started to create their own myth in order to establish it in local history.
